Flojeei

Flo
rence Etsey and Adjei Apenteng (Flojeei) were both born and brought up in Ghana. Since their teens both of them had a great interest in dancing and drumming. In 1988 Adjei became a member of the Odehe Dance Company as the guys' leader.
The two of them met when Florence joined the group in 1993 as the ladies organizer. For cultural exchange Florence and Adjei travelled to Nigeria. Later on Florence extended her studies in South Africa. With this background they both became teachers in the Odehe Centre, and worked under the leadership of Emmanuel Gomado. From him they got a lot of experience and developed their own style of teaching.
Florence is now based in Germany (Hamburg) teaching drumming and dancing.
Adjei is since 1999 based in Norway (Oslo) as a performing artist and dance- and drumming teacher.
Regularly the two of them run workshops in Norway, Sweden and Germany to let their students know both the male and the female side of dancing. And to exchange experiences among themselves as well as with other dancers and drummers.

Workshop

During your stay you will experience how deeply music and rhythm play a part in the everyday Ghanaian life. We will also give you further insights to our culture and languages through activities in the evenings. As an additional offer, we would like to take you along to see and experience different regions of our country. During drumming and dancing lessons we will focus on body coordination and feeling the rhythm as you move. Both are strongly connected and dependent of each other, as well as are dancing and drumming. The dance lessons will be accompanied by several drummers. You cannot dance without a rhythm, and no rhythm can come into being without movements. You are hereby welcome to our workshop to experience a deeper understanding of the flowing entity of dancers, drummers and rhythm.

singing, cultural education, language course, story telling
freetime during the day and in the evening
* Trips are organized additionally to the workshop and must be
paid seperately. Any necessary changes according to the local situation will be announced.

Accomodation

We will live in the guesthouse 'Kentey Centre' in Teshie, on the outskirts of Accra. Each room has two beds and its own bathroomwith shower and WC. The windows are protected with  mosquito nets. You need to bring your own mosquito net and fix it above your bed. From the roof balcony you get a beautiful view of the neighbourhood. On the compound there is a summer hut where we will have our dancing and drumming lessons. It takes you about 25 min with 'Trotro' (minibus) to the beach, and about 30 min to the city of Accra.

Food

After dancing in the morning, you will be served a rich European style breakfast, including Ghanaian bread, cheese, jam, peanut butter, cereals (muesli) and seasonal fruits. In between we add 'specials' like pancake or spicy scrambled eggs.
For dinner we serve home-made Ghanaian dishes like jolof rice, yam with vegetable stew, red-red, fish with tomato sauce and banku or fufu with groundnut soup.
Coffee, tea and boiled water are available at any time.

Workshop Fee

Transfer to and from the airport is included.
Flight and visa costs (as well as vaccination) are not part of the calculation - they must be organised by the participants themselves.
